San Francisco Bay was heavily fortified at the end of the 19th and into the 20th Century. Gun batteries and forts were constructed on both sides of the entrance to the bay, many of which still remain to this day. The main concentration of fortifications were located north of the Presidio (the main barracks for the area) on the rugged coast between Baker Beach and the Golden Gate Bridge. Pictures here show some of the most significant ones, including Battery Godfrey (1895), Battery Crosby (1900), Battery Chamberlain (1904), East Battery (1873) and Fort Point (1850). A walking trail leads from the bridge along the coast passing through the main batteries.
